About Website Down Now
Website Down Now answers one question quickly: is a website down for everyone, or just for you?
How a check works
- When you check an address, we request the site from several locations around the world at the same time, plus our own server.
- A location counts as reachable if the site sends any normal response. An “access denied” reply still means the server is online.
- A location counts as failing if the server returns an error (5xx), doesn’t answer in time, or can’t be connected to at all.
- The verdict is Up if every location reaches it, Down if none do, and Mixed if only some do — usually a regional, network or DNS problem.
The public “Recently checked” list
Each check (the web address, the result and the time) is saved and may appear in the public list on our homepage. We never record who ran a check. To keep the list useful and appropriate, addresses that don’t seem to exist and addresses containing offensive or adult terms are left out of the public list.
Site status pages
Every site that appears in the public list gets its own status page, such as websitedownnow.com/bbc.co.uk, showing its latest result and recent check history.
Known limits
We check whether a site’s server responds. A site can respond and still have problems further in, such as a broken login or checkout. Results can also differ by country, network and time, so a second check a minute later may give a different answer.
Location checks are run through Globalping, a free network of community-hosted test servers. If those locations are busy, we fall back to a check from our own server.
